Sensor Web Task Team

Description

The sensor web task team provides recommendations and support to CEOS relating to sensor web technologies. The task team will explore sensor web technology by developing prototypes and tools, and proposing standards and recommendations.

Task Team Focus

The Sensor web task team will focus on the following activities:

  • Coordinate WGISS-member activities supporting sensor web tasks within GEOSS and CEOS.
    • To facilitate the integration of remote sensor data with in-situ sensor data.
    • Assist Sensor Web tasks such as DA-07-04.
    • Provide support to the virtual constellations.
  • Identify WGISS inter-agency and inter-technology collaboration opportunities.
    • Provide a standards based proof-of-concepts of sensor web.
    • Develop processes and toolkits to improve sensor web adoption.
    • Evaluate sensor web applicability to other technologies such as GRID.
    • Leverage space agencies Sensor Web investments, such as the NASA Earth Science Sensor Web investments.
  • Provide feedback to standards bodies.
    • Evaluate the OGC SWE standards relevance to CEOS-member services.
    • Mature standards and capture lessons learnt.
    • Formally recommend proven standards to GEOSS and CEOS.
Sensor Web Background

The Sensor Web outlines an advanced spatial data infrastructure that extends standard spatial data infrastructures by incorporating targeted observations through dynamic tasking and feedback to adapt autonomous operations. The use of sensor web improves resource use and reuse, reduces cost, allows for adaptive observation, and improved spatial and temporal resolutions as a result of data fusion.

Task Team History

Established to investigate the applicability of sensor web as a task team within CEOS, to gauge interest and value that might arise out of such a task team and it's activities. The task team was later extended to support the CEOS response to sensor web activities within GEOSS.
